Inside Washington, USA
20.02.09Washington hosts the "DMAI - Destination Showcase Washington Conference & Expo" on February 26th, 2009. Elliott Ferguson, Senior VP, Convention Sales and Services and Chris Gieckel, International Media Relation Manager, Destination DC, about the best locations for meetings after the meeting in a relaxing city less intimidating than NYC.
Our favorite five locations...
Zola – 800 F Street NW, www.zoladc.com – Personally, this is in my top 5 restaurants in the city. The design is contemporary but because it’s right below the spy museum, has the feeling that there might be some espionage going on.
Oya Restaurant & Lounge – 777 9th Street, NW, www.oyadc.com – French Asian fusion restaurant has a great staple of sushi, small plates and French influenced entrees.
Martins Tavern – 1264 Wisconsin Ave, NW, www.martins-tavern.com – traditional American food. JFK proposed to Jackie here in one of the booths. It’s just a great place to rub elbows with the locals.
Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar – 226 Pennsylvania Ave SE, www.sonomadc.com – California fresh cuisine and a great local place in the evenings. It also has a nice wine list and a space upstairs for receptions.
The Oval Room – 800 Connecticut Ave NW, www.ovalroom.com – contemporary American cuisine just a few blocks north of the White House.
Our favorite nightlife locations...
Marvin, 2014 14th Street NW, www.marvindc.com – really the place to be in DC, all of the locals love this place!
Rocket Bar – 714 7th Street NW, www.rocketbardc.com – a local hangout popular with the after-work crowd that has traditional bar games like darts and pool.
Mie n Yu – 3125 M Street NW, www.mienyu.com – a really unique place in the city, has a middle eastern/ south Asian feel to it. Lots of locals and international locals (embassy/world bank/IMF people)
Bohemian Caverns – 2001 11th Street NW, www.bohemiancaverns.com – the best place in the city for jazz and the faux caverns to go with the name. It doesn’t get more local than this landmark!
Elliott thinks, Washington is the ideal meeting destination, because...
it has the perfect combination of hotels, convention space, restaurants, transportation, a cadre of dynamic attractions that are mostly free and unique venues that appeal to the international and domestic markets. Also, one cannot overlook our appeal as capitol of the US and the over 4,000 associations headquartered in the greater Washington area.
What Chris likes most about his city...
It’s really surprising and not what people think. The architecture is a beautiful mixture of old and new, the amount of green spaces or parks was overwhelming . The city is really made for walking and is really accessible via the cleanest Metro system I have ever been on. Most of all, it’s not intimidating like a NY with so many tall buildings and people rushing to get everywhere. You have the feeling as if you could slow down here, grab a coffee and chat with a complete stranger, or at anytime be simply amazed by the free museums and amount and beautiful sunsets by the river!
