Pogson was selected following an international recruitment process and succeeds the interim leadership that has overseen the Barbican Centre during a period of organisational transition. Her appointment is timed to coincide with the Barbican Renewal programme, a City Corporation investment described as a landmark £ 191 million project to restore and revitalise the venue and to support seasonal, cross-arts programming and a stronger civic remit.

Renewal programme, planning progress, fundraising and commercial strategy

The Renewal programme covers works to foyers, lakeside, catering block and conservatory and progressed through public consultation with over 90 % approval for the proposals cited in planning submissions. The Centre has opened a fundraising drive to supplement the City Corporation’s initial investment. City of London Corporation Policy Chairman Chris Hayward said Abigail Pogson’s leadership was well suited to advance the Renewal and Destination City objectives. The City of London Corporation is the Barbican’s owner and principal funder and is a major funder of cultural and heritage institutions in the UK.
