The findings of the 2024 Association Board Survey, conducted by Associations Forum and Governology, have been published. This year marks the first inclusion of data from UK associations, providing a comparative analysis of governance practices between Australia and the UK. The survey, conducted annually since 2008, gathered input from 250 associations to identify trends in Board composition, meeting formats, and leadership structures.

Governance Trends Across Australia and the UK

The report reveals notable insights into governance practices. The average Board size across both countries is nine directors, with 16% of Australian associations and 19% of UK associations reflecting this composition. Election processes differ slightly: 75% of Australian associations now elect their President/Chair through the Board, up from 74% in 2023, compared to 70% in the UK. Meeting formats are shifting toward online settings, with hybrid and in-person meetings in decline. Additionally, 16% of Australian associations pay directors’ fees, compared to 12% in the UK.
