Perinatal Medicine. Maastricht is the host city for roughly 2,000 participants of the four day congress of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine (EAPM) in 2016. This was recently announced in Paris, after the city presented itself as a candidate there. Winning this convention is the result of close cooperation between the Maastricht University Centre+, the Maastricht Convention Bureau, Maastricht Exhibition & Congress Center (MECC Maastricht) and other parties.
Professor Dr. Jan Nijhuis, gynaecologist and director of the department of gynaecology and obstetrics at Maastricht UMC+, is extremely pleased with the acquisition of the scientific conference in which all European countries are involved. “This news is reason for a celebration.” The European Association of Perinatal Medicine (EAPM) convention has the medical specializations neonatology, obstetrics/gynaecology, epidemiology and pathology. In the past, the biennial convention took place in Athens, Istanbul, Granada, Paris and Florence. “That’s a nice list of cities to be part of”, says Nijhuis.
Maastricht was chosen not only for the merits of Jan Nijhuis in his long academic career as a gynaecologist, but also because of the compactness and ambiance of the city and the MECC Maastricht. On behalf of the MECC, Mirjam Theunissen, responsible for congresses related to the Maastricht Health Campus, expressed herself very pleased about winning the EAPM convention. “Absolutely a confirmation that by working together with the right partners, a lot can be achieved in such a short period of time. Maastricht has got much to offer and this result gives a lot of energy to move forward.”
