CIM: Why did you become one of Leipzig’s three first (Congress) Ambassadors?
Prof. Kiess: Leipzig is an exciting location for science. Steeped in tradition, Leipzig’s university is now shaping up for the future. Great scientific conventions, especially in the fields of medicine and the biosciences, are taking place in Leipzig, which is a wonderful host city with an excellent infrastructure.
How important are international conventions for a city?
Firstly, international conventions are economically important for a city’s infrastructure, its hospitality sector, hotels and all spheres of life. They make a city well-known; it is discovered as a tourist destination, as a location for industry and communicated especially as a major city of science. International flair and a cosmopolitan outlook are the hallmarks of Leipzig that we must communicate.
Why will the 41st Annual Convention of the German Diabetes Society be in Leipzig?
Leipzig has been a well-known research location especially in the field of diabetes for decades. Over the past few years diabetes research has established itself even further in Leipzig. Its excellent meeting conditions, the city’s attractiveness and the open-mindedness of its congress organisers, the New Fair and Convention Centre are additional benefits.
Which topic will be of major importance for the 7,000 delegates?
The motto of the convention 2006 is “Tradition and Progress”. It will run the gamut from traditional diabetes treatment in children, adults and old people to the latest stem cell research and attempts to heal the disease.
In your opinion, what will medical conventions look like in 2016?
Medical conventions will be concentrated in fewer venues and become huge events. This is what’s been happening for years on an international scale. The German Diabetes Society will concentrate on one or two venues for its annual conventions, other societies are already doing so or will follow suit. Congresses will become mandatory further education events for hospital doctors and medical practitioners and continue to develop into global venues of scientific exchange.
