Helsinki Expo has participated in national energy-efficiency agreement periods since 2008 and now formalises targets for 2026–2035. The centre continues investments in building technology and renewable generation as part of a multi-year sustainability strategy that includes event-level carbon accounting and staff training in energy-efficient operation.
Measures, performance data and certifications
Installed solar panels generate 533 MWh annually (equivalent to the consumption of 168 two-room flats), and energy-saving systems in use include geothermal heating, district cooling, heat recovery and motion-sensor LED lighting. Event materials are largely reused, venue recycling rose to 24 % in H1 2025, and event-specific carbon footprint calculations are applied within the Events & Congresses business.
Helsinki Expo’s sustainability work is supported by ISO 14001 certification, a climate partnership with the City of Helsinki, the Glasgow Climate Declaration and the Sustainable Travel Finland label. Onsite partners include the Holiday Inn Helsinki-Expo (Nordic Swan Ecolabel) and NoHo Partners (EcoCompass certificate). Sustainability Manager Hanne Lindroos emphasised the Centre’s focus on concrete actions, regular energy reporting and customer-facing measures to reduce event carbon footprints.
