Status report. The Activity in the volcanic eruption has significantly reduced. This is the result of the status report given by the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police. The volcano is emitting low steam, 100-200 metres. Overnight the plume rose briefly up to 5 and 12 km height and small explosions can still be expected, according to information from the Icelandic Met Office. Travellers are advised not to go closer to the eruption than 6 km, due to these explosions.
The volcano is not emitting any ash into high altitude winds, only affecting the area near the eruption site. However the ash emitted over the weekend is still causing some problems in European airspace. Seismic tremor at the Grímsfjall station has reduced considerably. No earthquakes have been recorded in the volcano itself yesterday. The weather forecast says, that light northerly or variable wind and fair will be in most parts. It turns to southeast 8 to 13 m/s and will start raining in the southwest late today. Even Keflavik international airport, the biggest Airport on the island and close to the capital Reykjavik, is open for traffic.
