Frankfurt and ebbelwoi – two things that simply belong together. Alt-Sachsenhausen is probably the best-known Mecca of the stöffche – the local nickname for apple wine. But Textorstraße also has cosy and authentic pubs like Zum Feuerrädchen or Zum Kannonesteppel. www.stoeffche.de
Gerbermühle is a beautifully restored time-honoured location, a restaurant/hotel/summer garden on the banks of the Main, just outside the city’s gates. This is where 65-year-old Goethe met and fell in love with the young Marianne von Willemer. In the summer garden I like to enjoy one of Frankfurt’s typical specialities like handkäs or green sauce. www.gerbermuehle.de
Frankfurt’s Kleinmarkthalle in the heart of Frankfurt is not a restaurant but a gourmet’s paradise and the city’s multicultural microcosm. You can get a taste of everything. I like to go there during my lunch break to catch a snack amid the hustle and bustle. www.cityforum-profrankfurt.de/kleinmarkthalle
Holzhausenpark, a green gem in the Nordend with its moated castle offers opportunities for a quiet stroll or a cup of coffee far from the madding crowd. The castle has been an art and culture venue since the days of the Renaissance. www.holzhausenschloesschen.de
I love the contrasts in Frankfurt. When, on returning from a long trip, I drive along the motorway or land in a plane and already see the skyline from afar, my heart beats faster. One of my favourite lookout points is from the Old Bridge over the Main, which offers great views of the contrasts – the old buildings around Römerberg in the foreground and the skyscrapers in the background.
