CIM: You chose Colombia for the World Economic Forum on Latin America 2010. Why?
Klaus Schwab: Mexico and Brazil make up two thirds of economic performance in the region, but the World Economic Forum wants to keep up good relationships in the region with Chile, Colombia, Peru, Argentina and other major economies. Colombia is the fourth largest economy in South America and one of the most populated nations on the continent, with major coal and oil reserves. It is a leading supplier of gold, silver, emeralds and platinum. In the last few years it has implemented many economic and political reforms and thus achieved impressive growth. They are an essential reason why the country has survived the economic crisis with relative success.

What do you say to Europeans who perceive Colombia as insecure?

In the case of security concerns as regards Colombia, just like in many other situations around the world, perception has to catch up to reality. With the implementation of democratic security policy Uribe’s government in the last eight years has not only successfully improved institutions in Colombia, but also dramatically cut down criminality and violence. Our experiences before and during the World Economic Forum on Latin America 2010 have been perfect as regards security.

Was it for safety reasons that you preferred Cartagena to Bogotá?
The decision for Cartagena was taken together with our members, partners and the government of Colombia. Cartagena is one of the largest urban centres and the largest port in Colombia. The World Heritage City has already hosted many international events and conferences.

Have you taken other (increased) security precautions than 2009 in Brazil?
The highest security standards are maintained for the Forum, as for all our events around the world. From Davos in Switzerland to Doha in Qatar, New Delhi in India, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil or Cartagena in Colombia we always cooperate with the local authorities, in order to guarantee security at our meetings.

Has the Forum in Cartagena fulfilled your expectations?
The World Economic Forum on Latin America 2010 was an extraordinary success. I personally liked the atmosphere best, it truly corresponded to our “community spirit”. The programme and the extensive discussions were of the highest relevance for the region and have generated important ideas for the region, in order for Latin America to be prepared for an inclusive, competitive www.weforum.org
