Scotland. The world’s leading authorities on stem cell research are to meet in Edinburgh to discuss the latest advances in its development. The conference underlines Edinburgh and Scotland’s pre-eminence as a global centre of excellence in the field of stem cell science. It is expected that up to 350 international delegates will attend the 2nd Annual Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine Europe conference which will run for 3 days. The stem cell event is co-locating at the Edinburgh Conference Centre, Heriot-Watt University, with the inaugural World Biobanking Summit which will run for 2 days and is also anticipated to draw 350 delegates.

Between them the conferences, which will run in September this year (2009), will generate a total of 725.000 euros (£637,000) for the Edinburgh region economy. These two events are among 33 recently confirmed for the city by the Edinburgh Convention Bureau (ECB), the body responsible for promoting Scotland’s capital city as a leading global business tourism destination. Ten of the new events have medical links, demonstrating the importance of the city’s international reputation in the field of medicine in attracting high value conferences.

In total the 33 new events confirmed between 1 April and 10 May will attract up to 6166 delegates and inject almost 8.2 m euros (£7.2 m) into the local economy.
