The International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), managed by ASM Global, emphasizes sustainability as a critical aspect for event organizers. A survey conducted by ICC Sydney reveals that 86 per cent of UK and European event organizers view sustainability as essential, and 88 per cent believe that integrating sustainability, diversity, and inclusion enhances attendee experiences.
Geoff Donaghy, ICC Sydney CEO and Group Director – Convention Centres, ASM Global (APAC), is quoted saying: “The industry survey, delivered in collaboration with Conference and Incentive Travel, conducted among event professionals based across the United Kingdom and Europe, underscores a profound shift in attitudes towards sustainability, highlighting it not merely as an option but as an essential commitment.”
Key findings include the importance of accessibility (83 per cent), the influence of sustainability commitments on venue selection (42 per cent), and the need for better sustainability communication (37 per cent).
ICC Sydney supports sustainability through various initiatives:
- Energy Management: The venue uses 25 per cent renewable energy, including a 20 per cent purchase through energy contracts and a community-owned solar array.
- Switch It Off Campaign: Aims to reduce energy use by encouraging staff to turn off unused appliances.
- Water Reduction: ICC Sydney has diverted 65 per cent of waste from landfills and installed refill stations, saving over 2.65 million plastic bottles.
- Food Waste Management: Donated 34.6 tonnes of unserved food and 24.5 tonnes of goods to local charities.
- Accessibility and Inclusion: Provides guides for event organizers to ensure inclusive and accessible environments.
ICC Sydney’s initiatives and resources, such as the Legacy Program and various sustainability guides, support a sustainable and inclusive future, aiming for a net-zero, nature-positive impact on Sydney.
