The conference, established in 1988, is scheduled to take place at the International Convention Centre Sydney from 2–6 October 2028. The bid, led by BESydney in collaboration with Australian robotics researchers and supported by the NSW government, is expected to attract 7,000–10,000 delegates and generate an estimated $31 million in direct economic impact.

Global Robotics Research and Economic Impact

IROS is one of the largest international robotics research conferences, gathering experts to discuss advances in intelligent robots and smart machines. The event will highlight contributions from leading Australian research institutions such as the UTS ARC Research Hub for Human-Robot Teaming, the University of Sydney’s Australian Centre for Field Robotics, and the ARC Australian Robotic Inspection and Asset Management Hub. NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism, the Hon John Graham, noted that hosting IROS positions Sydney and Australia at the forefront of robotics innovation, supporting the state’s research ecosystem and visitor economy.
