1EARTH Month. Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) has committed to a four week agenda of activity focussing awareness on the environment and the community as part of a worldwide 1EARTH Month program. The AEG 1EARTH program represents AEG’s commitment to prioritise environmental performance and community engagement of the AEG operations worldwide.

The month long program started with World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour when BCEC was one of 56 AEG facilities and venues in 35 cities around the globe who extinguished all non-essential external and internal lighting for one hour at 8.30pm on Saturday 29th March and will continue through to Earth Day on the 22nd April.

The four week project involves staff, suppliers and clients, incorporating a number of activities and volunteering opportunities supported by a strong communication and education program to engage stakeholders. During 1EARTH month staff will engage in a diverse range of activities which include reducing energy consumption both at work and at home, advocating cycling to work, working for children at risk and supporting the homeless.

1EARTH Month will see the launch of the Centre’s Bicycle Users Group (BUG) which will enhance the Centre’s facilities for cyclists, help to improve bicycle skill and safety and encourage staff to cycle to work.

The Centre’s community outreach activities will focus on Bravehearts, Australia’s leading child protection organisation, participating in a working bee at a Bravehearts House and collecting art supplies for children’s therapy sessions and supporting Micah Projects working to end homelessness in Brisbane.

Bob O’Keeffe, BCEC General Manager and a member of the Centre’s Social Responsibility Task Force said the Centre’s 1EARTH Program serves to reinforce the importance of putting fundamental values into action. “We believe that each one of us has a responsibility to make choices that reduce our impact on the environment and contribute to building more caring communities.

“As an organisation we believe that such a commitment and involvement is a vital part of our offering as a world class facility. Building a sustainable business – one that balances economic performance with environmental health and community wellbeing is a win for all” he said.
