Described by Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson as “the jewel in Darwin’s crown”, the $115 million Darwin Convention Centre was launched in spectacular fashion last week although there were rumblings of dissension. Henderson said the centre would create 180 jobs and pull in $193 million in business tourism over the next two. Meanwhile, Nine National News carried a report critical of the centre’s architecture, and the ABC quoted Territory Opposition leader Terry Mills as describing the five-day, $500,000 opening celebration as “extravagant and reckless”.
