Australia. Described by Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson as “the jewel in Darwin’s crown”, the $115 million Darwin Convention Centre was launched in spectacular fashion last week although there were rumblings of dissension. Henderson said the centre would create 180 jobs and pull in $193 million in business tourism over the next two. Meanwhile, Nine National News carried a report critical of the centre’s architecture, and the ABC quoted Territory Opposition leader Terry Mills as describing the five-day, $500,000 opening celebration as “extravagant and reckless”. The Northern Territory News quoted him as saying the money would be better spent on more police, and an online critic described the party as political “grandstanding”. www.darwinconvention.com.au
